Why Algarve stands out
The Algarve's coastline is defined by dramatic ochre limestone cliffs and grottoes, most famously at Benagil Cave near Lagoa.
Ponta da Piedade, near Lagos, is a headland of eroded rock formations accessible by boat or coastal footpaths.
The region has a long golfing tradition, with numerous courses developed along the central and western coast since the 1960s.
Faro's Ria Formosa lagoon system is a protected wetland home to significant bird populations distinct from the region's cliff beaches.
Good to know
- The Algarve is markedly quieter and cheaper outside the June-to-September peak season.
- Many resort towns along the coast are seasonal, with some restaurants and attractions closing in winter.
- A car is generally recommended to move between towns, as beaches and villages are spread along a long coastline.
