Turning price changes into trip costs
This page tracks how prices are moving, not what a trip costs. To estimate the fuel or charging cost of a specific journey, use the Travel Cost Calculator. For current price levels, see European fuel prices and European electricity prices.
Methodology and source
- Source: Eurostat — Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), monthly indices, dataset prc_hicp_minr, unit Index, 2015 = 100 (I15). Official published aggregates only.
- Coverage: all 27 EU member states, January 2010 to July 2026 — 26,865 observations.
- HICP index levels are price indices (2015 = 100), not euro prices. A change is a percentage change of the index.
- Year-on-year: 100 × [ln(index_t) − ln(index_t−12)]. Three-month: 100 × [ln(index_t) − ln(index_t−3)]. Month-on-month: 100 × [ln(index_t) − ln(index_t−1)].
- Measures: Restaurants & accommodation = CP11 (Restaurants and accommodation services (ECOICOP division 11)); Energy = NRG (Special aggregate: energy); Food & non-alcoholic beverages = CP01 (Food and non-alcoholic beverages (ECOICOP division 01)); Core inflation = Overall index excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco; Headline inflation = All-items HICP (total).
- Eurostat observation flags are preserved as published, including break (“b”) and low-reliability (“u”) markers. Nothing is interpolated, imputed or reconstructed.
- Rankings always compare the same reference month for every country, so no two reference periods are mixed, and no unweighted “EU average” is published.
- The snapshot is built at build time; this page never contacts Eurostat while you use it.
