European Tourism Tracker
How many nights and arrivals each EU country reports at tourist accommodation, month by month, from official Eurostat statistics. These are establishment records — nights booked and check-ins — not unique visitors, border crossings or measures of how good a destination is.
Reference month for nights and arrivals: June 2026 · EU27 coverage · History from January 2010 · 26,030 observations · Source: Eurostat (tour_occ_nim, tour_occ_arm, tour_occ_mnor) · Snapshot retrieved 2026-09-09

Hotel bed occupancy — a separate measure, December 2025
Occupancy comes from a different Eurostat dataset with a different scope and a different reference month, so it must not be read together with the nights and arrivals above. Scope: Hotels and similar accommodation only (I551, fixed by the dataset; no nace_r2 or c_resid dimension). The figure is the net occupancy rate of hotel bed places, and year-on-year change is shown in percentage points. Published values can exceed 100 because extra beds are counted in the nights but not in the capacity; they are shown exactly as published.

Year-to-date occupancy is not published here: monthly occupancy percentages cannot be summed or averaged without the underlying available bed-place days.

Methodology and source
All figures come from monthly Eurostat accommodation statistics, taken as a snapshot on 2026-09-09 and stored with the page. Nothing is estimated, filled in or adjusted: months without a published figure stay empty and Eurostat's own notes are kept. Occupancy comes from a separate dataset with its own scope and reference month.
Full methodology notes
- Official published accommodation counts only; no reconstruction, interpolation, imputation or runtime Eurostat calls. Arrivals are establishment check-ins, not unique tourists or border arrivals. Residence is not nationality.
- The fixed present-day EU27 country list is reused from the Travel Price Tracker, including EL for Greece. History does not represent historical EU membership.
- Latest available means an actual non-missing EU27 observation. Common months are intersections across all 27 countries, separately by measure and metric; the history retains later observations.
- Counts: YoY and MoM = 100 × (current/base − 1); YTD compares complete January-to-reference-month sums with the same months a year earlier. These are arithmetic changes, unlike the existing HICP log changes.
- Occupancy: percent of available hotel bed-place-days, hotel scope only. YoY and MoM are percentage-point differences. YTD occupancy is unsupported without available bed-place-day denominators; monthly percentages are never summed or averaged. Published values above 100 are retained and audited: extra beds are excluded from capacity while their nights are counted.
- Growth comparisons crossing a Eurostat b break flag are missing with an explicit reason. Other flags are retained for every comparison input; estimates and low-reliability values require qualification.
- Rankings use unrounded values and competition ranks for ties. Each reports eligible/expected counts and every exclusion. An incomplete ranking must not be described as a complete EU27 ranking.
- Rankings are keyed by measure, month and metric: the measure common-month ranking is always retained with exclusions; a separate earlier full-country ranking is included when the metric common month differs.
- Nights reconciliation allows one night for independent rounding of published integer counts. Exact matches, every within-tolerance difference, larger mismatches and uncheckable triplets are recorded separately; no source value is altered.
- Tourism is seasonal and these series are not seasonally adjusted. MoM is descriptive. Country reporting thresholds and the methodological transition around 2012 limit long-run comparability; no unweighted EU average is constructed.
- HICP crossings establish matched-period data availability only. CP11 includes restaurants and accommodation and is not a hotel-price series. Tourism growth and HICP changes do not establish causal effects or affordability.
- The snapshot is built ahead of time; this page never contacts Eurostat while you use it.
