Residential prices are not public charging prices

Official electricity prices are residential averages — what households pay at home. Public EV charging prices can differ substantially, especially at rapid chargers, so the “1,000 EV miles” column is a comparison estimate only, not a quote for charging on the road.

Planning a trip? Use these prices in the Travel Cost Calculator to compare petrol, diesel and EV energy costs for your exact route and vehicle.

Methodology and source

  • Official data: every price is the average residential retail electricity price for a state (or D.C.) published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for June 2026. Values are used exactly as published and are never reinterpreted.
  • Coverage: all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. — 51 jurisdictions.
  • Units: prices are published in U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour and displayed primarily in cents per kWh. No currency conversion is ever applied.
  • 1,000 EV miles: estimated at a fixed 29 kWh per 100 miles (290 kWh per 1,000 miles), multiplied by the residential price. Real-world EV efficiency and charging prices vary.
  • No national average: this page shows the lowest, highest and median state price. It does not compute an unweighted mean of the 51 jurisdictions, which would not be an official U.S. average.
  • Freshness: EIA state electricity data is published monthly, roughly two months in arrears. A snapshot is treated as fresh for 120 days past the end of its reference month and is labelled when older.
