Tulum pairs the only Mayan ruins set directly above the sea with a beach road of low-rise eco hotels, yoga studios and beach clubs. Freshwater cenotes for swimming and cave diving are minutes inland, and the pace is deliberately slower than Cancun.

Why Tulum stands out
Tulum's Maya ruins sit on a clifftop directly overlooking the Caribbean Sea, making it one of the few coastal Maya archaeological sites.
The town sits near a large network of freshwater cenotes, natural sinkholes used for swimming and diving throughout the region.
Tulum grew from a small fishing and backpacker village into a destination known for boutique, eco-styled beachfront hotels.
The nearby Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve protects wetlands, reefs and forest along the coast south of the town.
Good to know
- The town centre and the beach hotel zone are separate areas several kilometres apart, so transport between them matters when choosing where to stay.
- Many beachfront properties rely on limited electricity and water infrastructure compared to larger resort towns, which affects amenities.
- Sargassum seaweed can affect beach conditions seasonally, particularly during warmer months.
